The Invention of Love is a funny comedy written by Tom Stoppard. The play represents the personal life and love for a college classmate of poet A.E. Housman. The play has been written with the stance of Housman dealing with his memories after dying and contains many classical references. He died at the age of 77. The play kicks off with A.E. Housman standing on the bank of the river Styx after his death. He boards his boat for the afterlife. The boat is captained by a peevish Charon. While sailing, Housman starts recalling moments from his life, opening with his matriculation to Oxford University, where he studied Classics. The play reveals Housman's relationship with Moses Jackson with a collection of short scenes . Jackson is the man for whom Housman nurtured a life-long, unanswered love. The scenes , throughout the play, also explore the late-Victorian artistic ideals as well as Housman's intellectual growth into a leading Latin textual scholar. The play portrays the older Housman commenting and occasionally talking to the characters on stage, including his younger self.

The Invention of Love was premiered at the Cottesloe Theater in the Royal National Theater, London, on 1 October 1997. John Wood played the old dead Housman and Paul Rhys played young one. Play was wonderfully directed by Richard Eyre. The play had a successful Broadway run at the Lyceum Theater. It opened on March 29, 2001, featuring Richard Easton as the older Housman and Robert Sean Leonard as the young Housman. Both actors won Tony Awards for their realistic performances, Easton winning Best Actor in a Play, Leonard winning Best Featured Actor in a Play. The play got rave reviews for its appealing set ups and performances by the cast. Michael Feingold from The Village Voice said, "Stoppard's text, the most enjoyable piece of static, non-narrative intellection I've ever experienced in a theater, takes a longer time than most to wear out its welcome."
