Nowadays playing at Mark taper Forum, iWitness is a riveting and emotional story about World War II. The story was written by the Israeli playwright Joshua Sobol. The play has been embroiled in many controversies since its opening and adaptation by Barry Edelstein. This is political play, both in content and in context. iWitness is spectacular account of the true story of Franz Jagerstatter, who denied to join the German army in 1943 and was executed for his denial. According to him, it was shameful and against the teachings of the Catholic Church to enter in the evils of the Nazi state. He followed his insight and demonstrated his position by refusing to wear the Nazi uniform. Whole of the play shows many characters trying to talk Jagerstatter out of his decision, and flashbacks to earlier, happier times.
This is a wonderfully directed and designed production with stark and gray sets that both suggests Jagerstatter's damp cell and permits for swift set changes when the scene moves into the past. Gareth Saxe has played Jagerstatter so beautifully just living the character while possessing a quality of convincing goodness. The performance by other cast is wonderful as they are embroiled in atense environment while attempting to dissuade Jagerstatter from his chosen path. The only things missing in the play is the central core that would allow the audience to really care about the Jagerstatter despite watching him simply a saint that is standing up to temptation. Character is tortured in the same way and respond same again and again. But still, leaving these small bits of missing, the play has left its desired impression on audience. The play has got exuberant reviews like Frawley Becker from Los Angeles, CA said, "A beautifully mounted and fast-paced production that rivets you to the stage while gnawing at your own consciousness in the face of present political inaction. Director Barry Edelstein juggles multimedia elements -- screen projections and moving images, choreography, play-acting, and just plain visceral theater -- with great aplomb. Superb performances by Gareth Saxe as Franz, the unyielding conscientious objector, Seamus Dever as his galvanic and mercurial chauffeur friend, Hans, and Rebecca Lowman as his loving but unnerving wife, Franca. See the play and then ask yourself two questions: What would I have done in Franz's shoes? And what am I doing now?".

The main character, Franz Jägerstätter is facing execution for refusing to serve the Nazi cause. Franz refuses to support a cause he knows to be immoral, despite the cost to himself and the ones he cares for. I did find the dual roles for some characters (as childhood friend and tribunal judge) distracting. It would have been better to have different actors play those roles. There is also a distracting side story between about woman Franz left for his wife. From what little is in the play it appears that we are supposed to believe that Franz found his moral compass from the woman who became his wife. It would have been more interesting to show the transformation from the ‘wild youth' to a deeply moral person instead of a magical transformation."
