Johnson enjoys telling the history of ventriloquism. It was before the telephone and the phonograph were invented, both of which made it possible to deliver human voice with technological efficiency. Johanson seems very convincing about how the famed Oracle at Delphi, who gave voice to the dead, was the most challenging job for a ventriloquist. In addition to the initial snake, Johnson now also gives his comic voice to a particularly sharp-witted vulture, a fun-loving monkey named Darwin, a tennis ball with eyes and, very cleverly, a white board. Each of these voice are distinctively specific of these characters and personality. The core characters of the shoe are the boy like puppets who played the biggest role in Johnson's career. First there was Squeaky, a chubby-cheeked character crafted by Sieving to reflect his handler's basic innocence. But the Squeaky didn't get the extension when Johnson got cast in "Soap", because he was simply too cherubic.
