Amid the turmoil of World War I, the most famous opera composer in the world, Giacomo Puccini was commissioned to write a Viennese operetta. Puccini used the Italian libretto of Giuseppe Adami as a guide and finished La Rondine, translated as the Swallow. La Rondine tickets were originally planned for a show produced by but his editor Tito Ricordi, but he declined to purchase his composition and the war ravaged on, forcing the opera to debut at the Opera de Monte-Carlo on March 27, 1917.
