La Scalla Ballet
Background-
La Scalla Ballet or the Teatro alla Scala was founded, in the year 1776 and the theater was designed by the Giuseppe Piermarini, the great neoclassical architect. La Scalla opened in the year 1778, on 3rd August with Antonio Salieri's opera L'Europa riconosciuta, to a libretto by Mattia Verazi. Some of the leading exponents were Giovanni Paisiello (1740-1816) and Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801). Some other famous operas are La frascatana (1780), Il barbiere di Siviglia (1786) and Nina pazza per amore (1804) by Paisiello, L'italiana in Londra (1780) and Il matrimonio segreto (1793) by Cimarosa.
In the year 1921, the ownership of the theater was transferred to the Milan City Council, who turned the Scala into a State-controlled municipal corporation, which will guarantee the annual financing of its activities. During that time, some famous appearances were Feodor Scialiapin, Magda Olivero, Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, Titta Ruffo, Gino Bechi, Beniamino Gigli, Mafalda Favero, Toti dal Monte, Gilda dalla Rizza and Aurelio Pertile. Even the designs underwent some changes in the standards of scenic design, designed by Nicola Benois. In the year 1943, La Scala was severely damaged by bombing. It was again opened under the supervision of Antonio Ghiringhelli. In the year 1948, Guido Cantelli made his debut, and thus established himself as one of the leading conductors of the orchestras and symphonies. A number of opeara performance were performed during that time (the Wagnerian cycle conducted in 1950 by Wilhelm Furtwängler, the Verdi repertoire by Victor De Sabata, etc), concerts (Herbert von Karajan, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Bruno Walter, etc), singers (Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Mario Del Monaco, etc), ballet performances (Margot Fonteyn, Serge Lifar, Maya Plissetskaya, Rudolf Nureyev), and productions (Luchino Visconti, Giorgio Strehler)

 Till 1986, many contemporary composers have performed the works of Luciano Berio (Outis), Hans Werner Henze (Lo sdegno del mare, Undine), Giacomo Manzoni (Doktor Faustus), Fabio Vacchi (La station thermale), Salvatore Sciarrino (Perseo e Andromeda), Aldo Clementi (Carillon), and Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story). When Riccardo Muti was appointed the musical director of La Scalla, he reintroduced Rigoletto, La traviata, Macbeth, La forza del destino, Falstaff and Don Carlo. He also directed the Italian Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy, as well as Idomeneo and La clemenza di Tito. In the year 1991, Roberto Gabbiani became the director of the chorus. After six years, he turned La Scala into a Foundation under private ownership. In the year 2000, Teatro alla Scala toured in Japan.
Giuseppe Verdi's Centenary Celebrations was inaugurated with a concert that was conducted by Riccardo Muti along with an Exhibition at Milan's Palazzo Reale. An opera opened with Il trovatore that was dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi. The opera was conducted by Maestro Muti. Mufti will also conduct the final opera of the series, Otello.
La Scalla Ballet dancers are one of the best dancers in the show. The ballet consists of Mr. Nureyev's own version of Prokofiev's ''Romeo and Juliet,'' which was first staged in 1978 with London's Festival Ballet. Some of the other frequent ballet performers of La Scala are from the Royal Ballet, Dame Margot Miss Fracci, who gained international fame when she performed in the Festival Ballet and American Ballet Theater.
