Le Corsaire is a ballet which has been adapted from the poem The Corsair which has been penned down by Lord Byron. The meaning of Le Corsaire is The Pirate. The ballet is divided into three acts. The ballet has been composed by six different composers: Cesare Pugni, Grand Duke Peter II of Oldenburg (AKA Prince Oldenburg or Prince Peter Von Oldenburg), Léo Delibes, Léon Minkus, Prince Nikita Trubetskoi, and Riccardo Drigo (often not all of these composers are credited). From time to time, the music of the ballet has changed with the demands of the audience.

The first adaptation Lord Byron's 1814 poem The Corsair was adapted by the balletmaster Ferdinand/Francois Albert Decombè to the music of Nicholas Bochsa for the ballet of the Drury Lane/King's Theatre in 1837. But it was the second adaptation, that proved to be the most successful ballets that was ever created. The second adaptation was presented in the year 1856 by the Ballet of the Académie Royale de Musique which is presently known as the Paris Opera Ballet, Paris. Balletmaster Joseph Mazilier was the chief choreographer of this ballet.
In Italy, the ballet Le Corsaire was created primarily for the most famous Italian ballerina Carolina Rosati, who was then, the reigning prima of the Opéra, in Italy. Wherever the ballet was performed it was a huge success.
In the year 1989 the Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet included the ballet Le Corsaire in its upcoming world tour. The ballet was premiered to great success in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House in the year1989.
Sergeyev then staged Le Corsaire for the Bolshoi Ballet, in the year 1992. The ballet was a huge success. After five years the production of Sergeyev's Le Corsaire was used again but with different sets and costumes, which was designed by Irina Tibilova. The music was copied from the score of Kirov/Mariinsky Ballet. The ballet was again premiered in the year 1997
American Ballet Theatre in New York rented the Boston Ballet's production for staging Le Corsaire . It too was a huge succes. Presently, Le Corsaire is staged by many companies all over the world. It is staged not only in Russia, but also in western Europe and in America. In America, it is Sergeyev's production while in Russia and in eastern Europe Gusev's revision is staged.
