Lend Me a Tenor is the vaudeville inspired story of a heavily medicated Italian tenor in a Cleveland hotel and the general manager of an opera company trying to put on a show in the meantime. The comedy's official debut was in the West End on March 6, 1986 at the Globe Theater. The actual debut came at the American Stage Festival, a summer theater event, in the States. The production came to the UK after David Gilmore, an English director saw the summer staging and requested to direct the Andrew Lloyd Weber-produced play. Lend Me a Tenor tickets sold very well and began a lifetime of big stage revivals and regional theater performances.
The UK version altered one aspect of the play, changing it from Opera Buffa. Broadway had its turn with the play in 1989, officially debuting Lend Me a Tenor at the Royale Theatre on March 2, 1989. Jerry Zaks directed and Phillip Bosco, Victor Garbor, Ron Holgate, Tovah Feldshuh, Caroline Lagerfelt, and Jane Connell starred.
