Noble winning playwright, Eugene O' Neill, wrote the play in 1940. The play was, however, published in 1956 after O' Neill's death. The play has four Acts and four major characters - James Tyrone Sr., a commercially successful and retired actor of Irish origin, who is somewhat stingy; Edmund, the younger and more brilliant son who returns home after working as a heavy drinking sailor; James Jr. (Jamie), an easygoing and unsuccessful actor addicted to alcohol and whoring; Mary Cavan Tyrone, the wife of James Tyrone Sr., suffering from accidental morphine addiction. The setting is the home of Tyrone family, year 1912. The play's opening Act reveals that Mary Tyrone has re-joined her family subsequent to her treatment for morphine addiction. As the play unravels, Edmund is seen coughing violently and it becomes known that he is suffering from tuberculosis. As the play progresses further, the family is constantly agonized by the painful realization that Mary is still addicted to morphine in spite of her rehabilitation at the sanatorium. These two discoveries regarding affliction of Edmund and Mary are at the core of the plot of the play. Amid these disastrous revelations, the family members continuously indulge in arguments. These arguments arise out of the family's frequent recollection of past quarrels and professional failure of both the sons. Also, James Tyrone Sr. is continuously blamed for Mary's inadvertent addiction to morphine because he preferred the services of a quack instead of a good doctor to ease her pain at the time of the birth of Edmund. His parsimony is censured throughout the play. In a vague attempt to escape the pain, the male characters drink more and more as the play moves further until they almost pass out in Act IV. Mary also seeks refuge in intoxication by using morphine. The day seems to be unusually long because of the gloom that prevails the house. The play gradually progresses toward a touching ending.
