Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the famous operas created by Donizetti, a renowned composer in the first half of the 19th century. It was popular in two versions, the Italian and the French, out of which the Italian was the first to be premiered. Salvatore Cammarano based on the novel The Bride of Lammermoor written by the all drew up the Italian version time great Sir Walter Scott. Lucia di Lammermoor is based on a central theme that revolves around the hardship that a pair of lovers undergoes for only committing an unintentional mistake of being born into two families that had placed familial feud atop of everything else. Historic rivalry between the two families deprives the lovers of their happy reunion. The tragedy extends further as the bride, at the climax, goes mad and kills herself thereby causing also the groom to end his life. The two Scottish families in question are Lammermoors and the Ravenswoods. The lover girl Lucia hails from the Lammermoors and Edgadro her counterpart in love belongs to the Ravenswoods. The villain brother Enrico overwhelms the strength of Edgardo and takes into possession his estates including the ancestral Ravenswood Castle after killing his kinsmen. Following that, Edgar, left with no option lives a lonely life by a tower known as the Wolf's Craig. But in course of time Enrico finds himself in descent due to waning fortune and increased political pressure. He plans to combat them with the support of Arturo from a different family and in return intends to give Lucia in marriage.
Against such a backdrop, the opera unfolds in three. Much to his gravest surprise Enrico discovers that Lucia had been hobnobbing with Edgardo, his béte-noire. Outraged, he swears to break the alliance. In the meanwhile, Edgardo responds to the call of duty and plans to visit France for a brief period of time. This offers time and opportunity for Enrico and he draws a plot with Normanno (caption of guard). He produces a forged letter that states Edgardo's engagement with another girl. This letter throws Lucia off and pushes her to extreme misery. Persistent Enrico uses her weak moment and convince her to marry Arturo as if to fulfill her mother's wishes and to reinstall the families honor. Giving in to this, Lucia agrees to sign the agreement for the marriage with and just at the moment she put pent o paper, Edgardo bursts in. On perceiving this as a betrayal Edgardo vacates the scene after cursing Lucia and trampling their secret engagement ring. The climax heats up when Enrico and Edgardo prepare to engage in a final duel. Things take a completely different turn when they learn that Lucia had gone mad, killed her would be husband and killed herself too! Enrico also learns that she prompted his name as she went down dying. Realizing the truth, Edgardo ends his life hoping to meet Lucia in heaven.
