Gustav Mahler's ‘Second Symphony' was an enormous composition and required a full orchestra. Having impressed his contemporaries and bigwigs of the symphonic world with this work, he followed this up with an even bigger composition – ‘Third Symphony.' It comprised six movements and duration of performance was one hour and forty minutes. Meanwhile, Mahler gained popularity by conducting operas and orchestras in musical hubs like Prague, Budapest, Hamburg, and Vienna. Owing to his massive reputation chiefly as a conductor, he was appointed Musical Director of the Vienna Hofoper Court Opera. Mahler introduced many innovative ideas to the Hofoper Court Opera and created new standards of performance, which distinguished the Opera in the whole world. He completed his ‘Fourth Symphony' in 1901 and by 1905 he had completed his ‘Seventh Symphony.' All of these symphonies were extremely modern and complex works. Around this time, he married Alma Schindler and fathered two daughters – Maria and Anna. The marriage turned out to be an unhappy one, especially during the later years.
Year 1907 proved to be an extremely tragic year for Mahler, as he was compelled to resign from Vienna Hofoper Opera as they could not understand his modern concepts; he was diagnosed with a heart valve defect; and he had to endure the demise of his elder daughter. By this time, however, his popularity as a gifted conductor had spread throughout the world. He came out with his spectacular ‘Eight Symphony' in 1908. A massive composition, it is also known as ‘A Symphony of a Thousand.' The symphony proved to be a stupendous success. Mahler's fine genius as a composer was finally recognized and how! His last compositions included ‘Das Lied von der Erde' (1908), the ‘Ninth Symphony' (1909), and ‘Tenth Symphony' (1910) which he left unfinished. He passed away on May 18, 1911.

Gustav Mahler was born on July 7, 1860 in Bohemia. His father was a distillery manager and mother homemaker. The frequent conflicts between his overassertive father and weak mother formed the basic style of his compositions, which often indicate the struggle between good and bad, mighty and weak etc. Taking cognizance of his talent when he was still very young, Mahler's parents sent him to Vienna Conservatory from where he graduated in flying colors winning many awards for his compositions in the final year. After graduation, he directed some operas and even during those early years insisted on complete artistic control. His earnest efforts brought him rave reviews. Around this time, he also began composing and created works like ‘Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen' (Songs of a Wayfarer) (1884) and ‘First Symphony' (1888). Mahler made it a point to conduct the premieres of all his orchestral compositions. Although, by this time he had made a reputation for himself as an accomplished conductor but he was yet to achieve the big success in the field of composing.
