Major Barbara, authored by George Bernard Shaw in 1905, consists of three acts. The central character of the play is Barbara Undershaft, a Major in the Salvation Army. The opening Act shows Lady Britomart, a British upper class middle-aged woman, having a discussion with her son, Stephan, regarding a stable source of income for her daughters Sarah, betrothed to Charles Lomax, and Barbara, affianced to Adolphous Cusins. They conclude that there is no other way but to take help from her ex-husband, Andrew Undershaft who is a millionaire businessman – owner of a munitions factory. The couple separated long back when kids were very young due to differences regarding distribution of Undershaft's property. Undershaft, himself having been an orphan, wants the heir to the Undershaft fortune to be foundling, so that he may be groomed for running the factory. Lady Britmort's decision to seek help of Undershaft, re-introduces Stephen, Sarah, and Barbara with their father.
On learning that Barbara is a Major in the Salvation Army, Undershaft is impressed and pays a visit to her workplace. Seeing her handle the work with great efficiency, he is even more impressed and decides to make her the heir to his business. When the officer in charge of the shelter, where Barbara works, accepts the sizeable donation given by Undershaft, in spite of Barbara objecting to it because of money coming from the weaponry, she becomes utterly disillusioned by the sheer hypocrisy. She leaves the shelter and moves with his father to his ammunition factory along with her fiancée, Adolphous Cusins. Barbara marries Cusins, settles in countryside near her father's factory and resolves to continue her work by spreading the message of salvation to workers.
The play moves at a fast pace and in spite of its grave underlying message, the element of humor is quite predominant. Humor is typically Shawish in nature – subtle and at times wittingly satirical. Through his excellent craft, author ridicules and in cleverly brings out the many ills of the so-called religious/charitable organizations. As is with most of the plays of George Bernard Shaw, this play also basically provides a good dose of entertainment while sending a relevant message to the audience.
