The story of Mary Stuart the Queen of Scotland imprisoned and executed to secure the thrown for Elizabeth I, was adopted for the stage by Friedrich Schiller and premiered in Weimar, Germany on June 14, 1800. The play sold plenty of tickets in its original form, but sold far more as the basis for Donizetti's opera Maria Stuarda in 1834.
