Though the play takes place in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in the 1950s, it is a universally relevant story of injustices that occur in different corners of the world. There are three characters- Harold, a 17 year old white boy nicknamed 'Hally' (the same as Athol's when he was a kid), Sam, a 45-year old black waiter and Willie, another black waiter also in his mid-40's. Hally looks up to Sam for guidance and worldly knowledge especially with his father gone to an institution. Most of Hally's fondest memories involve the two men, especially the time when Sam made a kite for a very young Hally. The scene is metaphorical of freedom as Sam breaks the laws of Apartheid to sit on the bench to watch the kite fly. They hold, long and important conversations on a variety of subjects. As the story unfolds we learn of Hally's alcoholic father and the anxiety it caused him. Hally also looks up to Sam as a father figure. This evening, the topics range from Ballroom Dancing ('A world without collisions'), reminiscing the past, ideas about what constitutes a great hero and Hally's 500-word essay. Hally considers Willie, who always calls him 'Master Harold', a child. Willie, along with Sam plans to participate in a ballroom dancing competition in two weeks. Hally doesn't understand that a night of dancing at the Eastern Province Open Dancing Championships is more than a thing of beauty but is symbolic of the hope that is nurtured in a space where for one night people never bump into each other. Hally, on his part thinks dancing is silly and Suddenly, a phone call announcing Hally's father's arrival disturbs the equilibrium. Hally's cruel and cranky father who has been in the hospital after losing his leg in World War II is returning.
The boy is tensed and worried of his father destroying his future and in a fit of helplessness, vents out years of latent rage and anger on Sam. A classic example of misdirected anger hutting a dear one. As Hally's frustration grows, he hurts the two men the same way his father hurt him. He insists on being called 'Master Harold'. Hally scorns Sam's passion of ballroom dancing, as 'mentally retarded' and 'a primitive pastime of the natives'. All the while Hally teaches Sam about geography, Darwin etc it the true lesson is learnt from Sam. Willie is broken to see the friendship of the two people he love the most shatter. In an unforgettable and heartening finale, Sam replies to Hally saying , 'You're ashamed of so much. Now that's going to include yourself.'
