Memphis the Musical begins with Huey Calhoun, a white man who enters the black rock and roll club Delray's. There he discovers a love of the music and of a singer, Felicia. Over the course of the musical he becomes a DJ despite being illiterate and helps make prime the country for the coming of rock and roll. Huey eventually becomes a national success, but his secret relationship with Felicia dooms his as he kisses her on his own television show. The network and his audience are not ready for a mixed race relationship. Memphis the Musical returns a few years later to find Huey as a radio DJ with a single listener and Felicia about to start a national tour. The two reunite on stage (though not romantically) and the show ends with a reprise of "Steal Your Rock and Roll".
