Born Michael Patrick Dumbell-Smith, 19 January 1942, in Salisbury Wiltshire, he re-christened his surname to Crawford do differentiate himself from another popular actor with the same surname. He was raised by his widow mother Doris and his grandparents. At the outset he used to be a boy soprano in a school production of Benjamin Britten's "Let's Make an Opera". He also found a place in the choir of St. Paul's Cathedral. He pursued his artistic pursuits in bits and pieces and did not really make it to the mainstream until he was about 15 and dropped out of the school. With about 500 radio broadcasts and numerous television appearances, he landed himself in the show "Not So Much a Programme, More a Way of Life" and bagged the Variety Club Award for the most promising new face. During 1960s, he balanced the initial part of his career very well by juggling between stage and films and appeared in a lot of stage plays and numerous funny movies. In 1968, he stormed into fame by playing a juvenile lead in "Hello, Dolly" directed by Gene Kelly, who also happens to be a lifetime buddy of his. And again, he rose to international stardom through his appearance in the long running comedy "No Sex Please – We're British" which was also an international tourist attraction. Some more credibility flowed in through "Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em" for which he was voted the Funniest Man on Television by readers of TV Times, and Television Actor of the Year by The Sun.
