On the fateful day of February 10, 1937 Moiseyev brought together around forty of the best dancers in a studio on Moscow's Leontievsky Street. After a lot of searching Moiseyev found the best dancers from all over the country. Six months after their formation, The Moiseyev Dance Company performed for the first time at the city's Green Theatre. The function of the inauguration had the most varied collection of dances from the Ukraine, Armenia, Belorussia, the far North and Azerbaijan. The public was floored by the performance and they were spellbound by the dancers. In the years that followed the small company grew both in size and fame. From performing in a few cities, they toured throughout the Soviet Union and with each performance they kept adding newer forms of dance from the regions like Georgia, the Caucausus, Mongolia, Uzbekistan, the Gobi desert and the remote regions of Siberia. Apart from dances, Moiseyev created shows based on special themes like the struggle of the Russians during World War II.
The end of the Cold War gave the company the opportunity to showcase their talent all round the world. The company toured in more than 60 countries spanning all continents. As and when they toured in different countries they included more and more dances like the dances of Spain, Japan, China, Bulgaria, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Hungary and, American jazz and rock ‘n' roll. Today the company boasts of more than 200 dances. America was stricken by the Moiseyev Dance Company in 1958 when Sol Hurok introduced it to New York's old Metropolitan Opera House on 39th Street. After the show the performers got a standing ovation for a full 25 minutes. Since that day they have never looked back.
