In 1951, Celia France founded The National Ballet of Canada in Toronto. In 1979, The National Ballet of Canada became the first Canadian troupe to perform at the Royal Opera House.
The National ballet of Canada was founded to create an unbiased Canadian Ballet Troupe in opposition to other troupes that was biased in their selection of dancers. Keeping true to their direction, they hired Celia France, a gifted dancer, ballet mistress and emerging choreographer from London to be their first Artistic Director. Under her direction, the company acquired the overall character of roots in ballet classicism while still committing to embracing its contemporary evolution. After serving for 23 years, she handed over the post to David Haber.
On November 12, 1951, the National Ballet of Canada gave its first performance in Eaton Auditorium with a showcase of Les Sylphides and Polovtsian Dances from Prince Igor. In 1964,NBC adopted the 3,200-seat 'Keefe Centre (now Hummingbird Centre) in Toronto for its fall, winter and spring hometown performances venue. In 2006, the company moved to the Four Seasons Centre.
