The idea of New York City Ballet germinated in Lincoln Kirstein's mind and when he met George Balanchine in London in 1933, Kirstein knew he had found the right person for his dream. He visualized young American dancers being trained and schooled under the guidance of the world's greatest ballet masters to perform a new, modern repertory in America itself.
Balanchine accepted Kirstein's invitation to come to America to start the school which would be the incubator of their American ballet. But it was not a smooth walk. During the initial years there were many hiccups. Rain played spoilsport and the the school's first performance was postponed. To add to it, the initial tour of the newly-formed American Ballet could not materialize. Those were difficult days and then World War II happened, everything went haywire. Kirstein served in the Army and Balanchine joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo as choreographer. During the gloomy period, the school existed and it was the only indication that the ballet dream was alive. One can easily say that these two men pulled up the school from despair and oblivion.
