Next to Normal tells the story of an American family that seems pretty average and typical from the outside. Mom is a little overbearing, but caring, Dad is a workaholic, Gabe, their son is on the high school football team, and their daughter Natalie is a bright, neurotic musician. However, looking a little closer shows there is much more than meets the eye. The mother, Diana, is dealing with an intense mental illness – and massive amount of prescription drugs she is told to take. All of this sounds like a strange story for a musical, but it works beautifully and received rave reviews. The contemporary rock score is epic, and is a perfect platform for these characters to express their emotions. The style is in the tradition of rock musicals such as Rent, Tommy, and Spring Awakening.
The show, written by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey started with a 2002 reading called Feeling Electric. Undergoing many changes, the show finally opened off-Broadway at Second Stage with its new title, Next to Normal. It did well, and then moved to Washington DC's Arena Stage where it underwent major changes. It finally came back to New York and opened on Broadway in 2009 to rave reviews.
