NIGHT Mother is a play written by Marsha Norman in the year 1983. The storyline of the play rotates around a daughter Jessie and her mother Thelma who is called by the name Mama in the play.
The play opens with a real touching and emotional scene as Jessie tells her Mama that she will be dead by morning, as she has planned to commit suicide in that very evening. Much to the surprise of the audiences, she is seen making all these revelations while organizing household items and helping her mother in her work. Then there goes the subsequent dialogues between her and her mother that reveals the reasons for her decision. The scene slowly proceeds showing her life with Mama. She tells her why she has planned her own death. The climax of the play is really disturbing but is unavoidable yet.
The plat has won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The original production of the play was staged at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The key stars in the play are Kathy Bates who played the role of Jessie and Anne Pitoniak who portrayed as her Mama.
Owing to the massive response from the audience, the production made its way to Broadway. Here, it was played at the John Golden Theatre and the cast of the play remained the same. Due to its beautiful screenplay and direction, it bagged 4 Tony Award nominations for the categories of Best Play, Best Actress for both Bates and Pitoniak and Best Director for Tom Moore.
Another film was made in 1986 film with the same name. It has starred Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft as daughter and mother, respectively. The only difference between the film and the play was that the film added more characters while the play had only two performers.
The film received rare reviews. However, Bancroft received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress for the Drama in a Film. A Broadway revival of the play in 2004 starred Edie Falco and Brenda Blethyn.
