Northanger Abbey was the first novel of Jane Austen that was written in the later period of 1790s, but it was published in the year 1817. The central character Catherine Morland hails from a well-to-do family of a village clergyman. On one occasion she is invited to Bath for the season by her rich friends. There she meets Isabella Thorpe, a wealthy as well as fashionable young woman whose brother is a friend of Catherine's brother, James Morland. Isabella tries to push Catherine into the world of romantic fantasies and "horrid" fictions. Later Isabella becomes engaged to James Morland. She tries her level best to ignite the fire of romance between Catherine and her irresponsible brother John Thorpe. But Catherine is more interested in General Tinley. Under the illusion, that was created by John Thorpe, that Catherine is wealthy, General Tinley invites her to stay at Northanger Abey. But a series of interesting events follow. Catherine imagination runs wild and she is convinced that Nothanger Abbey is similar to the setting of Gothic Novel and she comes to believe that General Tilney had murdered his late wife. When General Tilney returns from London, he comes to know that Catherine is penniless and has deceived the general, as supplied by John Thorpe. As a result she is humiliated and the General orders her to leave the abbey. Meanwhile, Henry Tilney's brother Captain Tilney made Isabella to broke off her engagement with James Morland. But Captain Tilney is a very clever man as to be taken in by the scheming Isabella and she is left without a husband. After that all the misunderstandings are cleared and Catherine is finally married off to Henry, with much fun and grandeur.
Northanger Abbey is a beautiful novel that exposes the difference between reality and fantasy. It also questions about the fact that in this world whom you can trust as your true companion and who might be your shallow or false friend. This novel is considered to be the most light-hearted of her novels. It is fundamentally a parody of Gothic fiction.
