Phantom of the Opera took on a life of its own in this initial creative process. First, Webber had issue finding a lyricist. He first commissioned Richard Stilgoe, but eventually allowed an unknown, Charles Hart, to rewrite many of the lyrics. Lloyd Webber participated as well and wrote the composition and the book along with both lyricists. Maria Bjornson designed elaborate sets and over 200 costumes and Hal Prince, with whom Lloyd Webber had worked previously on Evita, became the director and choreographer. After a short preview at Andrew Lloyd Webber's home in Sydmonton, Phantom opened on the West End a year later. This first production starred Michael Crawford as the Phantom of the Opera, Sarah Brightman as Christine Daae, and Steve Barton as Raoul. Phantom of the Opera tickets still sell for this production at Her Majesty's Theatre on the West End. The London production has been performed over 10,000, though the cast has since changed. Two years after opening in the West End, Phantom of the Opera opened across the Atlantic on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre, previews starting on January 9, 1988 and officially opening on January 26, 1988.
