Proof is a wonderful play by David Auburn and directed by John Maddon. David Auburn is famous is an American playwright born in 1969 in Chicago. After her father's demise, one of his ex-graduate student Hal finds a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert's office. The title pertains both to the proof and to the play's fundamental question whether Catherine prove the proof's authorship? Catherine has inherited her father's genius. While they prove the mysterious proof, Catherine also discovers herself in a relationship with 28-year-old Hal. Catherine's alienated sister, Claire, also comes home to settle down her family's affairs. The play has explored Catherine's fear of following in her father's footsteps, both mathematically and mentally, throughout the show.

Originally this play was produced by the Manhattan Theater Club on May 23, 2000. It was released as a Broadway show on October 24, 2000 at the Walter Kerr Theater. That time the play was directed by Daniel Sullivan. The cast included Mary-Louise Parker playing Catherine, Larry Bryggman playing Robert, Ben Shenkman playing Hal, and Johanna Day featured as Claire. For her outstanding performance in the play, Mary-Louise Parker won the Tony Award. Later on the lead role was played by Anne Heche during the Broadway run.
The play has been directed wonderfully by John Maddon reflecting his superb skills. The stage set is just perfect giving a feel of reality to the surroundings. Character of Catherine has played by Paltrow who has lived the character to its fullest. She looks delightfully subtle and seems very vulnerable. The play is treat to eyes and mind for two and a half hours as we just tend to forget that we were watching one of Hollywood's princesses, but instead could concentrate on the depiction of the emotional and sensitive but genius Catherine who has sacrificed her education to care for her academic but mentally ill father.
The play is no doubt very well constructed. It expresses the issues like inheritance, psychological instability and genius involving. David Auburn has presented a picture of family tension between the two sisters, making enough ambiguity about Catherine to keep the conclusion in some doubt.
