The play helped build a strong buzz thanks to the revival of another Mamet work (Oleanna) at the John Golden Theatre, an unquestionably direct title, and a plot wrapped in mystery. No one had any clue as to the actual story of Race. Instead they knew Mamet would be taking on racism on the live stage. Critics and theater majors immediately began salivating. James Spader, Richard Thomas, and David Alan Grier starred as the three lawyers (Jack Lawson, Charles Strickland, and Henry Brown) and Kerry Washington stars as Susan in the debut on November 16, 2009. The passing of the theater season meant a changing of the guard, with Eddie Izzard replacing Spader, Afton C. Willamson replacing Kerry Washington, and Dennis Haysbert replacing Grier (who received a 2010 Tony Award nomination for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play for his portrayal). Get your Race tickets to see this latest Mamet work live before it leaves the Broadway stage at the Ethyl Barrymore Theatre.
