Ragtime
Ragtime is a Broadway musical with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty, and book by Terrence McNally. It is based on the 1975 novel "Ragtime" by E. L. Doctorow. The musical was first put on trial in Toronto and Los Angeles, and eventually opened on Broadway on January 18, 1998.
Ragtime tells the story of three social groups in America, represented by Coalhouse Walker, a Harlem musician; Mother, the matriarch of a WASP family in New Rochelle, NY; and Tateh, a Latvian Jewish immigrant. The play incorporates historical figures like Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J. P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Stanford White, Harry K. Thaw, Admiral Peary, Matthew Henson, and Emma Goldman. The music has been beautifully composed and includes many genres like marches, cakewalks, gospel and ragtime. The narration of the story is mostly through songs, with very few spoken dialogs.
The Jewish immigrant's and the black man's struggles are vividly presented. The musical doesn't leave us feeling ashamed but it does raise issues of how far the world has come and how far it has to go. Ragtime takes us back in time. It provides a revealing introspect into the lives of these characters in a reforming America.
