He then went to acquire a sociology degree in 1953 from the University of Notre Dame. After completing his studies he served in the United States Navy. He also carried out an innumerable behind-the-scenes jobs in television and radio before moving in front of the camera. His first talk show was The Regis Philbin Show on KGTV in San Diego in California.
It was in the year 1967, that he gained his first national exposure as Joey Bishop's sidestick on The Joey Bishop Show that continued from the year 1967 till 1969. He continued his job as hosting in several programmes and other television roles. By 1970, he was a permanent host on Los Angeles morning television named A.M.Los Angeles which was a local morning talk show on KABC-TV. His presence brought the show from the bottom of the local ratings to number one position. As a result his popularity increased day by day and he started doing innumerable shows.
