After the original Showgirls drew such negative criticism nobody would have ever imagined that a sequel would be in the works. However, just as Striptease proved a year later in 1996, movies about strippers will never truly go out of style. Perhaps it was the support that made the original Showgirls a cult classic that helped investors raise $25 million to produce Showgirls 2: The Story of Hope. Whether or not Showgirls 2 tickets actually sell in theaters is most likely the last thought on director Marc Vorlander's mind. More than likely he and the producers are waiting for the DVD profits to more than cover the investment.
To understand the buzz around Showgirls 2: The Last Hope, one has to go back to 1995 and rekindle those memories of the original. The story is quite simple: the tale of an aspiring showgirl dancer that must hide her past and navigate the murky waters of the "dance" world in Las Vegas. Starring Elizabeth Berkley, the movie is over-the-top bad, becoming distinguished for its place on many critics' worst-movies-ever-made lists.
