South Pacific: The Musical
South Pacific tickets have been popular since the Rodgers and Hammerstein production opened in 1949 and went on to win several Tony Awards for the show and several key players. The musical that uses the Pacific front in World War II as a vehicle to explore racism and America captured the audience's attention and sympathy with timeless songs and a story that layers a love story, drama, and comedy.
The story of South Pacific is based on three short stories from James A. Michener's Tales of the South Pacific. The stories of Nurse Nellie Forbush and French island plantation owner Emile de Becque, Lt. Joe Cable and island girl Liat, and crude sailor Luther Billis and his longing for an available woman are intertwined until they are inseparable. Each story has its own highs and lows and brings the audience to another time in a foreign place where safety and cultural values are being challenged ever day. South Pacific tickets will continue to sell and the musical will remain a relevant classic as long as these basic themes hold true.
Nellie Forbush has those values she brought from Arkansas challenged by a man, Emile de Becque, who has two children from his deceased wife, a Polynesian woman. She struggles with issue of acceptance of an interracial family that tears at her heart and her upbringing as she must decide whether or not to accept a man who has willingly crossed cultural and racial barriers. This show has been a staple on Broadway because of this struggle and South Pacific tickets will continue to be sold out as this relationship persists.
While Nurse Forbush is busy with her romantic entanglement, Lt. Joe Cable must balance a blossoming relationship with an island girl, Liat, and his dangerous mission. He arrives with the intention of embarking on a covert mission behind enemy lines, but Luther Billis drags him to Bali Ha'I, where he meets Liat with more than a little push from Liat's mother, the much maligned "Bloody Mary" on the island base. South Pacific tickets offer a hint of danger with its romance thanks to this story line.

Show Biography - South Pacific
|
The final part, the comic relief, is the role Luther Billis was created for the play, literally. When Rodgers and Hammerstein purchased the rights to adapt the Pulitzer Prize winning book for the stage, they had James Michener write a whole new short story for the character of Luther Billis, the wise-cracking, entrepreneurial comic relief that breaks the tension and moves the story along, acting as a transition between Nellie Forbush's story and Lt. Cable's.
The most recent production won the 2008 Tony Award for the Best Revival of a Musical. The show has found a place in this new century, when the issue of race is still very much so at the forefront of American society. The show started selling tickets on April 3 at the Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre and has featured standout performances by Kelli O'Hara as Forbush and Paulo Szot as Emile de Becque under the direction of the critically acclaimed Bartlett Sher.
For those that enjoyed their South Pacific Musical tickets but do not want to pay to see the cast perform live again, the revival South Pacific cast released an album on May 27, 2008.
