The Cherry Orchard was authored by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov and was also his last play. It premiered at the Moscow Art Theater on 17 January 1904. This production was directed by Konstantin Stanislavsky. Unfortunately within six months, Chekhov would be dead of tuberculosis. Chekhov intended for the play to be a comedy and it does contain some elements of farce, but Stanislavsky insisted on directing the play as a tragicomedy. Since this incarnation, directors have chosen either path in directing this play.
The plot of the play revolves around an aristocratic Russian woman and her family as they return to the family's estate just before it is auctioned to pay the mortgage. While the family is presented with options to save the estate, they essentially do nothing and the play ends with the estate being sold and the family leaving. The story is a stark representation of the socio-economic forces at work in Russia at the turn of the 20th Century. These include the rise of a middle class and anti-capitalist sentiments. Many of these ideals led to the revolutions in 1905 and 1917.
