The House of Blue Leaves is coming back to Broadway after two decades away. The production will star Ben Stiller and Edie Falco as the patriarchs of a family involved in the intent to blow up the pope. The House of Blues tickets will be on sale for a revival at the Walter Kerr Theater.

However, Artie's AWOL son, Ronnie, sets out to blow up the Pope, potentially ruining Artie's last plea for fame.
Though the escapade fails to a disastrous degree, the play does not. Written by John Guare and earning accolades with an initial Off-Broadway run in 1971 that went 337 performances, the play takes the absurd and makes it into a dark comedy in which the fabric of the American society is cut with an author's stroke of the pen. The House of Blue Leaves questions the value and insanity of personal success in a world so fickle and shallow, a world in which people strive and are willing to sacrifice a lifetime for 15 minutes of fame.

Not every critic agreed that the play was a work of genius, but the long off-Broadway run in the early 1970s helped build a nostalgic sentiment worth exploiting in 1986. The House of Blue Leaves booked a production at the off-Broadway playhouse Mitizi E. Newhouse Theatre. This Jerry Zaks directed production starred an all star cast including Swoosie Kurtz, John Mahoney, Stockyard Channing, Danny Aiello, Ben Stiller, Julie Hagerty, Christine Baranski (later in the production), and Patricia Clarkson (later in the production). This run that gave Ben Stiller his stage debut eventually tranferred from off-Broadway to the big lights of Broadway, moving to the Vivian Beaumont Theatre for five months.
