The play is a somber drama with minor catches at places, where the audience may feel distracted. The story begins with the arrival of an American in a foreign city, to help out an old friend in need. As he starts searching for his friend he is lost in puzzlement, as he cannot trace him anywhere in the city. His friend has disappeared or it might be possible that he is dead, he starts appealing for help to the authorities, at the local place. He could not get any help from the local people and authorities, he then learns that his friend was dealing with some illegal matters basically concerned with children and also he made wrong use of the medical supplies. He was convinced as all the evidences were against his friend. The play takes an extreme turn when the American's friend actually comes face to face with him.
The play features a protagonist, Jack Exley played by Sam Robards who is a tenure-track teacher. He goes to Rwanda in the year 1994 where he gets caught in the bloody struggle of Tutsi versus Hutu. He went there to research for a book. Then there are tensions rising between the Exley household where Jack's wife Linda (Linda Powell) and Geoffrey (Michael Stahl-David) his arrogant son from his first marriage had some frictions with their step-relation. Jack receives no response and success in his research and the play creates an impact there and then. Along with that he get signals from the Rwandan Hutus who've been leading the country and continuously prepare for revenge against the Tutsi oppressors. The play continues with the thrill and excitement as the secrets are unfolded.

The Overwhelming is one of the most entertaining and interesting plays held in town. It imbibes the desired emotion and feel in the audience. This play has a winning playwright by J.T Rogers and is directed by Max Stafford-Clark. This exotic thriller had an unexpected response at its American premiere. Both the writer and the director already had their own fan following that resulted in the large crowd at the premier. Tickets for the show were sold off but the demand kept on increasing.
With the veterans acting in the play it again had to be a great hit. The cast of the play includes Chris Chalk, Ron Cephas Jones, Tisola Logan, Charles Parnell, Owiso Odera, Linda Powell, Boris McGiver, James Rebhorn, Sharon Washington Sam Robards and Michael Stahl-David. All these actors are well versed with their art and do not disappoint their viewers. There is a seperate team of designers who add life to the play and give it an appeal that seems to be realistic.
