Iris Dart is best known as the novelist who wrote Beaches in the 1980s, the book that would become the Bette Midler classic. In the 21st century, Dart has become a lyricist and librettist and her first big Broadway offering is People in the Picture. As Alzeimer's sets in she begins returning to pre-war Poland when she performed with a group of Jewish actors and actresses. Then she was Raisel and then she and her brave troupe continued to perform as the Holocaust began. Years later, in 1977, all that is left of these companions are people in the picture frames and Bubbie is trying to pass on the lessons of her life to Jennie.

Mike Stoller and Artie Butler composed the music, Leonard Foglia directs, Andy Blankenbuehler choreographed, Paul Gemignani acts as the musical director, Riccardo Hernandez acts as the scenic designer, Ann Hould-Ward acts as the costume designer, and Donna Murphy portrays Bubbie as the elder grandmother and young actress.
