Tony n' Tina's Wedding has been running in Manhattan on and off since 1988. It's an interactive comedy, set in an Italian wedding. The production has recently moved to new digs at Sofia's Restaurant in the Theatre District, where both parts--the wedding ceremony and the dinner/reception--now take place. After the bride's cousin, Sister Albert Maria, led us in a song I vaguely remember from catechism, the ceremony got under way. We meet most of the characters during the ceremony, including Big Anthony's bimbo girlfriend, the bride's gay brother, the pregnant maid of honor, and other stock "cuginos" and "paisanos." After the ceremony, bottles of champagne and antipasto are served, and the party gets underway, complete with a terrifically tacky cover band that started their set with a lounge version of J-Lo's "Let's Get Loud," and kept us dancing with mostly disco and eighties standards. Dinner is served, the cash bar stays open, and the guests move about interacting as much or as little as they like with the actors, which includes everyone from the wedding party to the servers.
The events that follow are somewhat predictable, but lots of fun. Many fights break out as the family and friends get drunker and drunker, and lots of little family secrets are revealed. I won't tell you what they are. Half the fun of the show is seeing how much you can find out and sharing it with the people at your table. The actors do a remarkable job of staying in character as they go from group to group, or drag you out onto the dance floor, treating you as cousins they haven't seen in a long time. The more you play along and engage in conversation with the actors, the more you find out. The only plot twist that kind of annoyed me—though I knew it was coming—was when the men's meeting in the back turned out to be about the "family business." There are Italian Americans who aren't in the Mafia (this reviewer, for instance), and being stuck in that box does get a little tedious. Nonetheless, even that scene had me laughing out loud, as Big Anthony went into the men's room to cool down, and then exploded out, attacking one of his thickheaded relatives.
