Trouble in Tahiti is a short opera composed by Leonard Bernstein to an English libretto written by himself. Leonard Bernstein wrote his operetta Trouble in Tahiti - a satirical commentary on the American middle class materialism in 1951, as an attempt to combine lyric poetry, pop culture, and social commentary. The operetta incorporates seven scenes and unleashes against an animated suburban backdrop. It received its first performance on 12 June 1952 at Brandeis University in Waltham. The story shows the disillusion of Dinah with her philandering husband Sam, who is more fascinated in his career than in his family.
Much of the music showcases many of Bernstein's most appealing qualities. Bernstein later wrote a sequel to the opera, "A Quiet Place."
