The characters in Twelfth Night are Orsino who is the Duke of Illyria, Malvolio, steward to Olivia, Viola the protagonist of the play, his lost twin brother Sebastian, Olivia the noble lady of Illyria, Antonia the captain, Maria, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, Feste and some other characters. Th play is set in a place situated on the east of Adriatic Sea , Illyria. Illyria gives a romantic flavor to Twelfth Night. Viola is the main character in the play who in the start of the play shipwrecked in Illyria. Her twin brother Sebastian has got lost and she believes that he is dead. She changes her name to Cesario and dresses like a man and starts working for Duke Orsino. Duke Orsino loves the grief stricken Lady Olivia. He tries to use Viola who is dressed as man as a mediator but fails in his task. Meanwhile Olivia under the impression that Viola is a man starts loving her. While Viola falls for Orsina. But Orsina believes that Viola is a man. The comic part of the play starts with the arrival of Sebastian who brings with him more confusion. Olivia who misidentifies Sebastian as Viola proposes him to marry her. Finally the play comes to end with the announcement of marriage between Olivia and Sebastian and Duke and Viola.
Although the date for first performance of Twelfth Night is till not known. But a law student John Manningham wrote about the performance of play at Middle Temple Hall on 2nd February, 1602 on Candlemas night in his diary. In the diary he wrote "At our feast we had a play called "Twelve Night, or What You Will," much like "The Comedy of Errors" or "Menaechmi" in Plautus, but most like and near to that in Italian called "Inganni. A good practice in it to make the steward believe his lady-widow was in love with him, by counterfeiting a letter as from his lady, in general term tellng him what she liked best in him and prescribing his gesture in smiling, his apparel, etc. and then, when he came to practice, making him believe they took him for mad."
