Woyzeck suddenly comes to find out that his girl friend and the mother of his child, is having an affair with the drum major. He goes to meet Marie and calls her to the side of a pond, in his rage he cuts her throat. He then tries to defuse his pain and anger by getting drunk. In his drunken state he realizes and sometimes imagines that people are looking at him rather suspiciously. In a drastic step, he returns to the pond and drowns himself.
Woyzeck has been interpreted in many forms. It was adapted into an opera by Alban Berg. It was even turned into a motion picture by Werner Herzog.
