On the most basic level, Yellowman is a play about the discrimination and hostility that exists between lighter skinned blacks and Dark skinned blacks. It is the story of an African-American woman, Alma, and her lighter skinned lover, Eugene,who have to face the adversities that exist in their own community. The play explores the negative associations that surround male blackness as well as the effect these racial stereotypes have on black women. The play is the first solo attempt by Pulitzer Prize finalist Dael Orlandersmith.
The title of her play, "Yellowman,"is in direct reference to many of the derogatory childhood labels that are put on lighter-skinned blacks by their darker- skinned peers like "high yella," "school bus," "zebra," "redbone," etc. The name calling is not one way traffic. Both Alma and Eugene have experienced the trauma of growing up Black in Russellville, South Carolina. Ironically they undergo very different experiences. Alma is a dark skinned black while Eugene's skin is much lighter. Eugene's father loves his light-skinned wife but discriminates against his son because of the same lightness. Alma, on the other hand, suffers under her darker-skinned self loathing mother Odelia. Alma and Eugene have been friends from childhood and eventually fall in love with each other. Their greatest challenge is that they must learn to deal with their own negative perceptions and the perceptions of the people around them. As they struggle for acceptance in their difficult social setting, their greatest test will be their belief, in their love and on each other.
