Tired Pony is a super group, but a super group only industry insiders and indie rock aficionados will recognize. This group combines the efforts of five musicians from the UK – Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol), Richard Colburn (Belle & Sebastian), Iain Archer, Troy Stewart (Snow Patrol touring guitarist) and Jackknife Lee (producer) – and three from the United States – Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Scott McCaughey (The young Fresh Fellows and The Minus 5). Together, these seven musicians set out to write and record an album meant to pay homage to country music. Instead, as anyone with the new album or with Tired Pony tickets can attest, the group created a terrific Americana album.
The group began in May 2009 when Gary Lightbody set out to record a country album. The album was to be a "twisted love letter" to the United States, and it may be, but it is done without the country twang he intended. The album has received amazing reviews so far. Released through Polydor Records, a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group, the album hit the shelves in the UK on July 12, 2010 and the U.S. On September 28, 2010. So far the album has peaked at number 17 on the UK charts and has debuted on the Billboard 200 in the U.S.

Despite already having six band members and a producer on board, the album required a little help form Zooey Deschannel and M. Ward of She and Him and Tom Smith of the Editors. Incredibly, the album took one week to record. Tired Pony met in the states in Portland, Oregon in January 2010. The result of such a fine collection of music minds is an amazing album that almost guarantees a followup effort.
