His other projects with Vesala include trumpet solos in the Taj Mahal; with Vesala, he collaborated with Chico Freeman and Howard Johnson in New York. He worked at length with Cecil Taylor in big group contexts, and headed a number of groups of his own, like ‘COCX', which spread post-Bitches Brew rock-rhythms, and ‘Freelectronic', an ahead-of-its-time exploration of electro-acoustic options.
Apart from international projects and collaborations, Stanko also headed a Polish quartet that has now become his main concern. The quartet comprises of Stanko, Pianist Marcin Wasilewski, bassist Slawomir Kurkiewicz and drummer Michal Miskiewicz. Stanko began working with the trio in 1994, at first on theatre music and then on films and other polish projects. The trio, pianist, bassist and drummer also work on their own projects using the moniker ‘Simple Acoustic Trio'. The quartet's debut release was ‘Soul of Things'. Since the first release, the quartet has continued to make a mark in the world of jazz. After touring extensively, the band came out with yet another album ‘Suspended Night' which was well accepted.
The Stanko Quartet spent most of 2004 touring; they performed in Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, and USA, ITALY and in their own home land Poland.

Artist Biography - Tomasz Stanko Quartet
|
At the age of twenty, after graduating from Cracow Music Academy, Tomasz Stanko started his first band the ‘Jazz Darings' with pianist Adam Makowicz. The band is often considered to be the first European group to play free jazz, but for the trumpeter its significance was overshadowed by the invitation to join Krzystof Komeda's quintet the following year. For five years Stanko remained with Komeda and appeared on 11 albums with him, and also provided assistance to all of the film scores that Komeda composed in Poland. In 1970 Stanko became a part of Schlippenbachi's ‘Globe Unity Orchestra' and also started a quintet, with violinist Zbiegniew Seifert.
