The group Tool emerged in the 1990s as a hard rock band that seemed to transcend the typical the music of the genre. They defined the progressive rock movement, accentuating this music type with a certain degree of art rock. The band took shape after each if its original band members moved to Los Angeles. Lead singer Maynard James Keenan, lead guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Paul D'Amour, and drummer Danny Carey practiced for two years before emerging from the studio space and playing a show as Tool. They began with a demo album 72826 in 1991 and followed through with the EP Opiate in 1992. The first studio album came in 1993. Undertow went double platinum and featured two singles, "Sober" and "Prison Sex". Both songs landed on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart. The album and the legendary comedian Bill Hicks took the group to new heights of popularity. The video for "Sober" even won the "Best Video By a New Artist" from Billboard. Tool followed with a second album, Aenima. Aenima came out in 1996. By now, Justin Chancellor replaced D'Amour as the bassist. Tool enjoyed triple-platinum sales and the number two status on the Billboard 200. The album released four singles: "Stinkfist", "H", "Aenema", and "Forty-Six & 2". Each of the singles landed on the U.S. Mainstream Rock charts. Just as the group toured for multiple years on the first album, Tool took four years on the road to support this second album. Two more number one albums followed - Lateralus in 2001 and 10,000 Days in 2006. Lateralus went double platinum and 10,000 Days went platinum. "Schism", Parabola", Vicarious", and "The Pot" all reached the Top 10 in the charts. Tool began to spend less and less time together, as Keenan immersed himself in side projects.
