Joe Louis Arena It is the official home to the Detroit Red Wings, which is a National Hockey League franchise. The arena was inaugurated in the year 1979 and was built at an approximate cost of 57 million dollar. It was named after a well-known boxer and a heavy weight champion, Joe Louis, who began his boxing career in Detroit only. So it means that it is one of the few NHL arenas that do not have any corporate sponsorship name. The Arena is governed by the city of Detroit and is functioned by Olympia Entertainment, an Ilitch Holdings, Inc.-owned Company. The Arena replaced the Olympia Stadium and is located just adjacent to Cobo Hall on the bank of the Detroit River. It is easily accessible through its own station on the Detroit People Mover.

The Arena is very famous for hosting the historic Republican National Convention in the year 1980. It was the same period during which Mr. Ronald Reagan (the future President) got the party's nomination and it proved to be a vital step in the Conservative Revolution and the nation's recovery from the bonds of liberalism in the 20th century. The Arena currently houses eighty-six premium suites. It introduced the Comerica Bank Legend's Club in the year 2008, which was a 181-person private seating location, situated in the southeast side of the Arena. It also served host to a very crucial “Game 5” of the WNBA Finals held between the Sacramento Monarchs and Detroit Shock in the year 2006. It played host to this particular match because The Palace of Auburn Hills (the Shock's usual home arena) was already booked for a Mariah Carey concert on the same day. The Shock won the game by a margin of 80–75, to win the title.
