The Ohio Theatre was a movie palace that was restored later and now serves as one of the famous performing arts center in Columbus, Ohio. It is known as the "Official Theatre of the State of Ohio" and was declared a “National Historic Landmark” in the year 1977. It is situated in Columbus on the site of the very famous and old Columbus City Hall. The theater was designed by a world-famous architect Thomas W. LAMB and was furnished by a renowned decorator Anne Dornan The famous movie palace was built by the Loew's and United Artists movie theatre chain and was inaugurated in the year 1928. It offered a seating capacity for 2,779 people and featured its own orchestra and a Robert-Morton theatre organ that is still in use today, even after going through the renovation task. Apart from all kinds of movies, an amazing variety of shows were shown on the stage, with brilliant performers like Milton Berle, Ray Bolger, Buddy Ebsen, Jean Harlow, Ginger Rogers and Jack Benny to add to the charm.
Loew's shut down the theatre in the year 1969 and it was threatened with destruction before it was saved by an organization called Columbus Association for the Performing Arts. It went through the renovation work later on. The original venue was completely restored with an all-new addition of a new lobby, office and many stage facilities in order to make it modernized in every way. The Ohio Theater was later used as a Performing Arts Center and served as a model for many later historic ventures in the United States. Today it plays host to many events like the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, BalletMet, the Broadway Series, Opera Columbus and the CAPA Summer Movie Series.
