The city of Vernon is located in the province of British Columbia, Canada. Vernon lies in the south-central portion of the state and is a part of the Metropolitan region, Greater Vernon. According to the 2006 census, the population of the city stands at 35,944. It is also the largest city in the entire North Okanagan Regional District. Residents of this city are popularly known as 'Vernonites'.

The city was incorporated in the year 1892. It is named after the former MLA of British Columbia, 'Forbes George Vernon'. Vernon has frequently featured in lists of most livable cities in North America. As per the Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 94.2 km².

The city of Vernon is particularly popular for hosting the Vernon Winter Carnival. The carnival has been held for nearly fifty years now and is a popular tradition. In summertime, the city also hosts the Sunshine festival. The Vernon and District Performing Arts Center in the city, is the cultural hub of the city. Throughout the year a number of events take place in this center, such as dancing shows, theaters, musicals and other music performances.

Vernon has a popular sporting tradition and culture. The area has several golf courses, such as the massive 'Predator Ridge' Golf Resort, which is a 27-hole golf resort and community. Another major golf course is scheduled to open in this year itself. Skiing is another popular winter sports in Vernon. The city hast two major ski locations, namely the 'Silver Star Mountain Resort' and the 'Sovereign Lake Nordic Club'. The city also has a strong following for the sport of Curling. The Vernon Curling Club is an accomplished and reputed club based in this city. Over the years, the city has hosted several national curling events as well. The famed hockey club 'Vernon Vipers' is also from this city. The club has won the 'Royal Bank Cup' a number of times and is reputed to be one of the strongest minor hockey clubs.
