Vh1 Music Awards
The only award show where the categories, nominees and winners are chosen by the fans via their online votes, with the ability to vote up until the moment each award is given live on the air.
The recent voting fiasco in Florida has led many to question the integrity of democratic mechanisms in the United States of America. On November 30, just weeks after the Presidential Nonelection, VH1 demonstrated that democracy is alive and well in the U.S. with the first ever My VH1 Music Awards. The winners of the awards were selected solely on the basis of Internet voting, which took place at VH1's Web site. When the digital dust had settled, over 4 million votes were counted to elect this year's stars. It is clear that the Internet has already begun democratize music on a global scale and will continue to do so, but VH1 took a giant leap for the process with this event. Beginning in October, VH1.com users voted online to select the award categories, make nominations, and ultimately determine the winners. Voting continued right up to the presentation of the prizes.
Hosted by John Leguizamo, the show presented recognition in twenty three categories. Conventional categories such as "Best Live Act," won by Dave Matthews Band, were augmented with more alternative awards such as "Booty Shake," won by Ricky Martin, and "Coolest Fan Website," won by Nancies.org. Two of the more interesting prize titles were "Your Song Kicked Ass but Was Played Too Damn Much" and "You Want Fries With That Album?," won by Carlos Santana and Faith Hill, respectively. The "Fries" category was a tongue-in-cheek poke at performers who supplemented their artistic income with corporate advertising contracts. Faith Hill won for her Pepsi advertisements.
This year's big winner was Creed, who walked with four awards, including "Group of the Year" and "Song of the Year." Although pop acts like 'NSync and Britney Spears earned nominations in several categories, the boy bands and pop princesses were conspicuously absent from the winners' circle. The people have spoken, and popular music is apparently charting a new course away from Bubble Gum Land. Long live democracy.
