The city of West Lafayette is located in the state of Indiana, United States. West Lafayette falls in the Tippecanoe County and is situated 65 miles northwest of Indianapolis. The city was named in honor of the French military hero 'General Lafayette'. According to the 2000 census the population of the city stands at 28,778.

West Lafayette overlooks the Wabash River, which borders the city on the eastern and the southern side. The city covers a total area of 5.5 square miles, of which 99.82% is land. The main-campus of the famous and reputed Purdue University is located in this city. The Purdue University is not only one of the most reputed, but also one of the largest university systems in the entire United States.

The city's economy is hugely dependent on the Purdue University, which has an enrollment of nearly 40,000 and also employs around 12,000 more people. One of the major centers of the city is the 591-acre Purdue Research Park. The Research Park was found in the year 1961 and it is home to over 140 high-tech companies. It offers world-class research facilities and state-of-the-art communications infrastructure. The research park is one of the largest university-affiliated ones in the entire country. Many reputable companies are located in this research park, such as Endocyte, Bioanalytical Systems, Griffin Analytical Technologies and Arxan Technologies, Inc.

Other tourist attractions in the city are the 'Harry's Chocolate Shop', an extremely old and famed bar, and the 'Fort Ouiatenon', which used to be a French trading post.
