Whitby is a town in the Ontario province, Canada. The town is situated east to the city of Toronto on the northern shore of the Lake Ontario and is the headquarters of the 'Regional Municipality of Durham'. The town covers a total area of 56.57 sq mi. and has a mixed composition of rural and urban areas. Whereas the southern portions of the town are primarily urban, the northern parts are predominantly rural.

The town was initially named the Whitby Township, after the seaport town of Whitby in the Yorkshire county, England. The town is characterized by a rapidly growing rate of population growth. According to the 2006 census, the population of the town stands at 111,184. This is much higher than the town's population in the year 2001, which was 87,413. The staggering growth rate totals off to 27.2% in five years.

Whitby is a major commercial capital. There are many business centers located in the town, such as the steel mill operated by 'Gerdau Ameristeel', the retail support centre operated by 'Sobeys', a warehouse of the 'Liquor Control Board of Ontario' and the Canadian headquarters of BMW.

The popular and accomplished ice hockey club 'Whitby Dunlops' is from this town. The club has a rich history and had also won the elusive world championship in the year 1958 at Oslo, Norway. Another sport that is extremely popular in this town is Lacrosse. One of the most successful clubs in the history of Canadian Lacrosse, the 'Brooklin Redmen Senior' is from this town. A major sporting center in this town is the 'Iroquois Sports Complex', which is quite famous in not only Canada but also the entire North America.
