The city of White Plains is located in the state of New York. White Plains falls in the Westchester County and is the county seat of the same. According to the 2000 census, the population of the city stands at 53,077. However, a 2006 census estimate report quotes the population to have reached at 57,081. As per the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is around 10.8 sq mi, of which more than 97% is land.

White Plains is situated south-central of Westchester, around 4 miles east of the Hudson River and nearly 2.5 miles northwest of the Long Island Sound. It is surrounded by the town of North Castle, the village of Harrison, the town of Scarsdale and Greenburgh on its north, east, south and west sides respectively.

Historically, the town has been a major business center and has centers of many corporations of the Fortune 500 companies. The cultural center of the town is the Arts Exchange Building, which is also the headquarters of the Westchester Arts Council. Many notable performances have been made in this reputed center. There are many historic sites in this city, that are major tourist attractions. Some of them are the 'White Plains Armory', the 'White Plains Rural Cemetery' and the 'Percy Grainger Home'.

The major town center is the 'City Center White Plains'. This retail, restaurant and entertainment space is a massive structure that occupies a space of 600,000 sq ft. The Mercy College, the College of Westchester and the Berkeley College are some educational institutes in this city. Another major tourist attraction is the 'Jacob Purdy House'. The structure was General George Washington's headquarters for a long period of time and is presently the headquarters of the White Plains Historical Society.
