The city of Whittier is located in the state of California. Whittier lies in the Los Angeles county and is just 12 miles away from the city of Los Angeles. According to the 2000 census, the population of the city stands at 83,680. The city is one of the Gateway Cities. The city was named after the respected Quaker poet 'John Greenleaf Whittier', who has also dedicated a poem to the city.

In the last two decades the city of Whittier has experienced a tremendous growth in population. Its population in the year 2010 is projected to be 90,041. As per the United States Census Bureau, the city covers a total area of 37.9 km², which is all land. The city is surrounded by the community of Hacienda Heights, the City of Industry, the Pico Rivera, the La Habra Heights, the La Habra and the Santa Fe Springs in its northeast, north, west, east, southeast and south respectively.

The famous Whittier College is also located in this city. There are many historical landmarks in the city, which are all major tourist attractions. Some of them are : The 'Rose Hills Memorial Park', 'The Principia Discordia', the 'Pio Pico State Historic Park' and the 'Whittier Museum'. The Whittier Museum is an especially popular place to visit and it features many articulates having great significance in the history of California.
