Will Smith
Will Smith grew up in middle class West Philadelphia and got the nickname 'Prince' because of the way he could charm his way out of trouble. While pursuing music, he met Jeff Townes at a party and they soon began performing together as DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. The duo received the first ever Grammy award for "Best Rap Performance" for the song "Parents Just Don't Understand". In 1989, he met Benny Medina, who had an idea for a sitcom based on his life in Beverly Hills. Smith loved the idea as did NBC which put on the "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," in 1990. The series lasted a successful 6 years, and during that time, he ventured into movies where the critics took note of him like in Six Degrees of Separation in 1993. That same year, the final Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince record, Code Red, was released, even though it was a dissapointment. With the success that came with the action picture Bad Boys in 1995, Will's movie career had become set. The Blockbuster Independence Day in 1996 was a huge hit where Smith plays the alien-battling Marine Corps Captain Steven Hiller.

A year later, Will Smith starred in Men in Black, which was again the box-office champ of the summer season. After recording for the first time under his given name, he also scored a smash with the movie's rap theme. Smith's debut solo LP, Big Willie Style, also appeared in 1997, notching the hits "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," "Just the Two of Us," and "Miami." With 1999's Wild Wild West being his first box-office disappointment, he returned with the album Willennium. During his rap career, Smith won a Grammy award for the song "Summertime".
