Robben Ford decided to record his new album The Inside Story for which he convened a group of veteran session musicians for his album. While recording the album the three musicians, keyboardist Russell Ferrante, bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Ricky Lawson, found out that they all shared the same interest that is music and so decided to form their own band which they named Yellowjackets. Since the album of Robben Ford, The Inside Story was mainly instrumental, the record label wanted Robben to record another album that was oriented to pop and vocal. But the group, also known as the Robben Ford Group, wanted to pursue the instrumental route only and so a band was formed within the band. Along with Robben Ford on guitar, the band recorded a digital demos, that was later accepted by Warner Brothers. This led to the birth of Yellowjackets, finally.
The debut album of Yellowjackets was a smashing hit that really made serious waves in jazz radio, garnered public as well as critical acclaim. Although they side by side carried on with their projects, they got together again in the year 1984 for the Playboy Jazz Festival, where they were joined by percussionist Paulinho Da Costa and their new lead voice, sax man Marc Russo. The concert was a landmark in their career and thus cleared the path for their eventual success both on the Billboard Jazz charts and many other concerts all around the world. Triggered by the success in the concerts, they released their next album Samurai Samba. In 1986, they signed up with MCA Records to record Shades. The title track was written by Donald Fagen (of Steely Dan fame).

They came out with their next albums Four Corners and Ricky Lawson left the band to join Lionel Richie's touring band. He was replaced by William Kennedy. With the entry of William, the Yellowjackets entered into a new territory, where they explored world beats as well as the populated soundscapes which reflected the maturity of their music. They then came out with their next album Cloudjackets Politics, where in they experimented with acoustic sounds. Marc Russo's final recording with Yellowjackets was The Spin that was recorded in Oslo, Norway by the famous engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug, who is well known for his work on the ECM label, and the band proved that they can also provide their fans with the best acoustic jazz. Marc was later replaced by Bob Mintzer. The Jackets also recorded on one of Bob Mintzer's dmp Records projects, One Music. Then followed their next album Like A River and Run For Your Life that shows the growing interest in straight-ahead acoustic jazz.
In the year 1995, they released Dreamland under the Warner Brothers. Then came Blue Hats, that was rich in music and showed the maturity of the Yellowjackets. Next was Club Nocturne, their latest studio recording, that features guest vocalists Kurt Elling, Jonathan Butler and Brenda Russell. In the year 1999, William Kennedy left the band to pursue his other area of interests, he was replaced by Peter Erskine but later Erskine left the band since he had busy scheduled. In 2000, Russell, Jimmy and Bob used different drummers and toured extensively throughout the year. The same year Jimmy, released his solo project Red Heat. They signed up with the HeadsUp International label, and released "Time Squared", the holiday release "Peace Round", "Altered State" and, most recently "Twenty-Five"
